It's probably not the sexiest target in the world, but constipation related to the use of painkillers or from abdominal surgery is a serious problem. It extends hospital stays and is a real burden for those who use opiods (morphine, codeine) for relief from chronic pain.

It's also a lucrative condition. If Adolor and partner Glaxo are able to take alvimopan to market in both target indications, the companies will have a solid blockbuster on their hands.
