Medarex (MEDX) has created a monoclonal antibody (MAb) targeting CTLA-4. This antibody, MDX-010, essentially pushes the body to create autoimmune disease. This helps cancer vaccines break the body’s existing tolerance for the cancer cells and seems to unlock a more powerful immune response.

Medarex is more famous for core technology that creates fully human (not “humanized”) antibodies using genetically engineered mice. This technology is outlicensed to dozens of partners and is a considerable asset for the company.
